Ordinary people
Many people would like to take up self defence or martial arts but allow themselves to be put off by the thought that everyone else is going to be fitter, stronger and younger than they are, they are afraid that if they join a club they will be the odd one out, that they wont be able to do what everyone else can do, that they wont be able to keep up, at Dunbar Self Defence we cater for ordinary people, we leave our ego at the door and join in.
Just getting out of the house and doing what you can in training will increase your fitness level but always bear in mind that we are not training athletes and we are not training for competitions, we are practising self protection, the one thing that we practise the most above all else is the Fence and you don’t have to be super human to do this.
We do work on our fitness but each person to their own level, we have many tiring drills that we use to embed technique and mental toughness but the goal is not keep up with the fittest members of the club, not be as strong or as fast as anyone else but to do what you can for you, to go one step better next month than you did last month.
Most people who win fights in the street are in pretty poor physical shape and could not stomach a whole nights training in our club because there is a huge difference between a 90 minute training session and a 90 second fight, that’s why we break our training up into separate, short, intensive drills because that’s how it will be in the street, short and very intense.
During training we encourage everyone that comes along to drink plenty of water and rest when you need rest, we find that in the club atmosphere with the support and encouragement of your friends most people actually do more than they though they could, our club is great for this, everyone is very friendly and very supportive, there are no heroes and no ego’s.
We are not club for professional body guards, bouncers, ex-special forces, of course all are welcome but we practise ordinary everyday self protection for ordinary everyday people.
